Nepali Photographer Captures Human Toll of Devastating Nepal-Tibet Floods

A Nepali photographer and documentary filmmaker has captured the intense emotional toll and survival efforts in the wake of catastrophic flash flooding across the Nepal-Tibet region. Rasik Maharjan, originally based in Kathmandu, traveled 60 kilometers west to Nuwakot to document the disaster after learning about the severity of the floods on August 26.

Nuwakot, situated along the Trishuli and Tadi Rivers, saw neighboring villages devastated by floodwaters. High-resolution satellite imagery reveals that entire structures and settlements were erased as glacial waters swept through local neighborhoods. As of Tuesday, the flooding has claimed more than 1,000 lives, with thousands of people remaining missing, including 38 Australians. In some severe instances, bodies have been recovered more than 100 kilometers downstream from where the floodwaters struck.

Documenting Search Efforts and Personal Loss

Upon arriving in Nuwakot, Maharjan observed desperate families gathered around a small military post, searching through hundreds of names taped to walls in hopes of identifying survivors. Photos and names of missing individuals have been affixed to public buildings throughout the disaster zones. Maharjan noted that families have been waiting near helipads day and night for military and rescue teams, looking up every time a helicopter approaches.

The reality of the disaster hit Maharjan personally when he failed to find a missing school friend's name on the survivor lists. He stated that knowing a victim personally transformed the assignment into an agonizing experience whenever he reviewed the notice boards or observed the displaced residents around the camp.

The Challenges Behind the Lens

While covering the crisis, Maharjan recounted stories of survival, including a group of school children who managed to scramble to the riverbanks and reach safety after being swept away by the floodwaters. Despite the emotional strain of witnessing families lose their homes and relatives, Maharjan emphasized his commitment to documenting the crisis so the world can see the reality on the ground.
