Motorsport Legend Peter Brock Honoured 20 Years After Tragic Death

The motorsport community and family members have gathered to honour the legacy of Australian racing icon Peter Brock on the 20th anniversary of his death. Known widely as the "King of the Mountain," the 61-year-old driver passed away on September 8, 2006, following a crash during a rally event in Gidgegannup, near Perth.

Brock's sudden passing triggered a widespread national reaction, culminating in a state funeral in Victoria and spontaneous tributes across race tracks nationwide. Two decades later, his sons, Rob and James Brock, joined fans and sport officials in reflecting on his extraordinary career and personal impact.

A Historic Career at Mount Panorama

Brock made his professional racing debut in 1969 at Mount Panorama. Over his career in the Touring Car Championship, he accumulated 212 race starts, 48 victories, and three championship titles. He established an unmatched legacy by winning the Bathurst 1000 nine times, a record that remains unbroken today. His achievements led to his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

To commemorate his enduring influence, an exhibition opened on Tuesday at the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst. Museum coordinator Brad Owen highlighted Brock's role in popularising Australian motorsport globally as the Bathurst 1000 gained international broadcast coverage during the 1970s and 1980s.

Family Tributes and Lasting Memories

Brock's family shared personal memories alongside his professional successes. His stepson, James Brock, recalled the highlight of competing alongside his stepfather, which included a shared victory in the V8 Ute series at Mount Panorama in 2003. Son Rob Brock reflected on his father's ability to balance a public racing persona with dedicated family time at home.

The anniversary exhibition in Bathurst continues to showcase memorabilia and commemorate Brock's standing as one of the most prominent figures in Australian sporting history.
