Moira Deeming to Represent Family First in Upcoming Victorian Election

Former Liberal MP Moira Deeming has announced she will contest the upcoming Victorian state election in November as a candidate for the Family First party. Deeming, who currently serves as a crossbench member in the Legislative Council, revealed her decision on Thursday morning alongside Family First national director Lyle Shelton.

Background on Departure from the Liberal Party

The announcement follows Deeming's disendowment as the Liberal Party candidate for the Western Metro Region in July. Her removal stemmed from a refusal to issue an apology to her party room colleague Matthew Guy. Deeming had previously accused Guy of placing her in a headlock during a crowded community event.

Victoria Police conducted a review of CCTV footage from the event, which appeared to show Guy placing his hand on Deeming's shoulder while conversing. Police subsequently stated that no criminal offence was detected. Following her refusal to apologize, Deeming was stripped of her candidacy and subsequently left the parliamentary Liberal party room.

Political Future with Family First

Addressing her transition to Family First, Deeming stated that she had no regrets regarding the events that led to her departure from the Liberals. She also indicated that multiple political parties had approached her with offers to contest the upcoming election under their banners before she decided to join Family First.
