Born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 25, 1934, Steinem experienced a challenging childhood and did not enter full-time schooling until age 12. After graduating from university in the late 1950s, she traveled to India on a research scholarship, where she spent two years helping village women organize non-violent protests against government policies, an experience that ignited her passion for grassroots activism.

Journalism Career and Women's Rights Advocacy

In the early 1960s, Steinem relocated to New York City to work as a freelance writer, gaining widespread recognition following an exposé on the working conditions of Playboy Bunnies. She later served as a columnist for New York Magazine and, more than 50 years ago, co-founded the Women's Action Alliance to combat sexism. In 1972, she co-founded Ms. magazine, a pioneering publication that shifted focus away from traditional topics like housekeeping and beauty to center on broader women's issues.

Throughout the 1970s and subsequent decades, Steinem emerged as a leading advocate for women's reproductive rights, equal pay, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and an opponent of both the death penalty and female genital mutilation. Having undergone an illegal abortion in London at age 22, she celebrated the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision granting constitutional abortion rights, and later witnessed its reversal nearly 50 years onward.

Although she famously avoided marriage for decades, Steinem married South African-born entrepreneur and environmentalist David Bale in 2000. When asked about her decision, she remarked, "I didn't change. Marriage changed." Bale, father of actor Christian Bale, died three years later from brain lymphoma. In 2013, President Barack Obama awarded Steinem the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
