German Steakhouse Heiress Christina Block Faces Trial in Alleged Child Abduction Case

Christina Block, the 53-year-old heiress to the German Block House steakhouse chain, is currently on trial in Hamburg alongside six co-defendants over allegations of orchestrating the violent abduction of two of her children from Denmark. The high-profile proceedings have been ongoing since July last year in a high-security courtroom and recently led to a major spin-off investigation involving a former German intelligence chief.

Prosecutors allege that Block and family lawyer Andreas Costard arranged for an Israeli security team to forcibly seize her children, then aged 10 and 13, from her former husband, Stephan Hensel, during New Year's celebrations in late 2023. According to the indictment, several men ambushed and assaulted Hensel in Denmark, forced the children into a vehicle, taped their mouths, bound the girl's hands, and transported them in a campervan to Baden-Württemberg. The children were allegedly held until Block retrieved them on January 2, 2024, to bring them to Hamburg.

Charges and Defense Arguments

Block, Costard, and an Israeli citizen identified as Jonathan G face charges of abduction of minors, grievous bodily harm, and unlawful detention. Four others, including Block's partner, former television presenter Gerhard Delling, are charged with aiding and abetting. All defendants deny wrongdoing, except for Jonathan G, who admitted involvement but stated in court that he believed he was participating in a legitimate rescue operation. Block testified that she had no prior knowledge of the abduction plot and that the security firm acted independently.

The incident follows a prolonged custody dispute. Following the couple's separation, the children initially resided with Block in Hamburg. In 2021, the two youngest children visited Hensel in Denmark and were not returned. A Hamburg court awarded custody to Block, but a Danish court ruled in February 2023 that the children should remain in Denmark. Hensel faces a pending charge of child abduction from May 2023, which he denies, alongside allegations from Block that he acted out of revenge.

Witness Testimony and Espionage Investigation

David Barkay, identified in court as the head of the Israeli security firm and a former Mossad agent, testified that Block and Costard were aware of the repatriation plan, though he withheld specific details due to a lack of trust. Barkay is not a defendant in the current trial but faces separate legal proceedings.

The investigation into Block's case also led police to search the home of August Hanning, the 80-year-old former head of Germany's foreign intelligence service. Hanning was previously accused of arranging security personnel for an earlier 2022 retrieval attempt in Denmark, charges his attorney denies. During the search, authorities uncovered evidence alleging Hanning purchased approximately 2,000 documents from his former chief of staff and passed state secrets to foreign entities. Hanning was arrested this month on charges of treason and espionage, which his legal team contends are unfounded.

The trial against Block in Hamburg is temporarily paused after a witness failed to appear, marking the latest in several delays over the 15-month proceedings.
