European Officials Point to Russia as Sabotage Attacks Target Defence Facilities

European authorities are investigating a surge in suspicious fires and drone incidents targeting military and defence facilities across the continent, with several governments attributing the acts to Russian sabotage operations. The recent wave of incidents follows an August drone discovery at Germany's Leipzig airport, a critical logistics hub used for transporting military goods to Ukraine. German Interior Minister officials have publicly held Russia responsible for the airport breach, a claim Kremlin officials have dismissed as unfounded.

Series of Fires Target Defence Infrastructure Across Europe

Throughout August, multiple fires and incidents disrupted defence manufacturing and infrastructure across several European nations. On August 10, a major fire broke out at a warehouse belonging to the Bulgarian defence company EMCO in Tryavna, with the firm excluding human error as the cause. Days later, on August 13, an explosion occurred following a fire at the KNDS Ammo facility outside Rome, Italy, prompting local prosecutors to open a case into negligent disaster while examining potential foreign interference.

In Estonia, a blaze destroyed parts of the Milrem Robotics factory in Tallinn on August 15. Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that investigators were taking the possibility of Russian involvement seriously, and two suspects were subsequently arrested. Similar incidents were reported in Slovakia, where police prevented a planned arson attack on a Ukrainian-owned drone manufacturer on August 25, arresting three individuals allegedly acting under orders.

Arrests and Investigations Continue in Poland and Germany

Poland reported two incidents on August 30, including a fire at a helicopter component manufacturer in Lublin and an attempted arson attack captured on CCTV at the drone manufacturer WB Group. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the actions as part of ongoing escalatory activities. On August 31, another fire struck a major defence facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna.

Security operations have continued into September. German authorities recently arrested two Bulgarian nationals in Munich suspected of throwing incendiary devices at defence firm Rohde & Schwarz. Furthermore, a German federal police report revealed that over 165 suspected sabotage cases have been recorded nationwide this year, though official responsibility for all incidents remains under investigation.
