Edge Early Learning Permanently Closes Charnwood Childcare Centre in Canberra

National childcare operator Edge Early Learning has announced the permanent closure of its Charnwood centre in northern Canberra. The decision follows a three-month suspension issued by the ACT regulator, Children's Education and Care Assurance (CECA), over safety and supervision concerns.

The provider, which recently entered voluntary administration while attempting to maintain operations nationwide, informed parents that reopening after the three-month suspension period was unviable. Edge Early Learning stated that because families would need to find alternative care during the closure, re-establishing the service later would be too difficult, despite efforts over the past year to address compliance concerns through leadership changes and additional training.

Regulatory Issues and Previous Closures

The shutdown comes two months after Edge Early Learning permanently closed another service in Higgins. That facility was initially issued a one-month suspension following its failure to respond to a serious medical incident involving a child. Rather than resuming operations at Higgins, the operator chose to shut it down completely. Edge continues to run one remaining ACT centre in Ngunnawal.

Addressing the issues at the Charnwood facility, CECA executive Sean Moysey pointed to high staff turnover and inexperienced personnel as significant risk factors affecting child supervision. Moysey noted that the average tenure for a nominated supervisor at the centre was just 23 weeks. The regulator reported repeated instances of staff being unable to locate children within the service. CECA had previously ordered the operator to increase staffing levels above statutory minimum ratios.

The sudden announcement left families searching for immediate alternative care. Parents reported receiving only a week's notice regarding the closure, though staff at the facility actively assisted families and educators in securing alternative arrangements and employment.

Peak body ACT Parents advised impacted families to utilize resources such as the government's Starting Blocks website to evaluate compliance histories and check for vacancies at other local facilities. Meanwhile, administrators handling Edge Early Learning's voluntary administration issued a national call for expressions of interest on September 1 to find potential buyers for the company or its centres.
