Bangkok Declared Disaster Area Following Massive Rainfall and Flooding

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt on Saturday declared Thailand's capital city a disaster-affected zone following heavy rainfall that led to severe, widespread flooding. Almost 300 millimetres of rain fell across the city over a 48-hour period, prompting the declaration across all 50 districts to accelerate official response efforts.

Impact on Infrastructure and Travel

The torrential downpour caused significant disruption, leaving major roadways inundated and vehicles partially submerged. Pedestrians were observed wading through waist-deep waters in affected areas. Governor Sittipunt warned that the flooding poses risks to human life and could cause damage to both private and public property, noting that conditions are particularly severe near local canals.

Flight operations at Suvarnabhumi, the city's main airport, remain normal according to air traffic control authorities, though minor flight delays are possible. The tourism authority has recommended that travellers allocate an additional two to three hours for their journeys to account for travel disruptions.

Emergency Relief and Resident Response

To assist impacted populations, authorities have established over 200 evacuation shelters across Bangkok, housing roughly 4,200 residents. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration designated schools to serve as temporary housing and advised the public to refrain from non-essential travel. Additionally, the military has deployed disaster relief assistance, establishing field kitchens and emergency shelters.

The government issued an urgent advisory directing people residing near canals to relocate their belongings to higher ground. In response to the crisis, local supermarkets saw heavy crowds as residents rushed to purchase essential goods. Governor Sittipunt stated that municipal teams are working to pump out floodwaters, explaining that inundations should lessen once the precipitation stops. However, weather agencies project further thunderstorms over the weekend.
