Apple Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America for US Users Following Executive Order

Apple has updated its Maps application to display the name "Lake America" instead of Lake Ontario for users based in the United States. The digital mapping change follows an executive order issued by US President Donald Trump directing the renaming of the body of water located along the border between New York state and the Canadian province of Ontario.

The adjustment applies exclusively to US users of Apple Maps. Individuals accessing the application outside the United States will continue to see the traditional designation, Lake Ontario. The tech company implemented the modification after receiving direct outreach from the president.

Political Context and Reactions

President Trump addressed the adoption of the name by major navigation platforms on Truth Social, stating that the update by Apple Maps and Google Maps rendered the change finalized. However, the executive order carries no legal authority over international naming conventions or Canadian territory.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly rejected the renaming effort, explaining via social media that the title originates from the Indigenous Wendat language and predates the founding of both Canada and the United States.

Although the executive order framed the change as a tribute to American heritage, the decree coincided with heightened trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. Recent bilateral negotiations collapsed, leading the US to impose 50 percent duties on several Canadian imports and prompt retaliatory tariffs from Canada ranging from 25 to 50 percent on hundreds of American commodities.

Tech Industry Response

Before Apple's update, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed that the administration had communicated directly with Apple executives regarding the presidential mandate. Competitor Google implemented the update over the weekend, referencing standard protocols that align US map labels with the Geographic Names Information System. Google Maps displays "Lake America" in the US, "Lake Ontario" in Canada, and both titles for users elsewhere.

In contrast, mapping service MapQuest explicitly declined to modify its labeling. Following a social media post stating it would maintain the original name, MapQuest experienced a surge in downloads, briefly reaching the top spot on Apple’s App Store in the United States.
