AfD Secures Major Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Election Short of Absolute Majority

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has secured a significant victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, positioning itself well ahead of mainstream political competitors. Based on counted interim results, the far-right party is projected to win a record 44% of the vote, while the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) fell to 17%. Despite failing to reach the 42 seats needed for an absolute majority in the 83-seat state parliament, the party announced it has received a mandate to govern.

According to projections, the AfD is set to take 39 parliamentary seats. Voter turnout in the state of 2.1 million reached 76.7%. No far-right political group has governed a German state since World War Two. Control at the state level confers authority over local culture, education, and policing functions. Domestic intelligence agencies classify the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt as "right-wing extremist," a designation rejected by the party's 35-year-old state leader, Ulrich Siegmund.

Reactions and Government Prospects

Following the exit poll announcements, Siegmund described the results as a signal for the entire nation and expressed a desire to enter government promptly. He rejected leading a minority government for now, noting he remains open to collaborating with individual lawmakers or parties, or facing new elections if necessary. The CDU's top candidate, Sven Schulze, conceded defeat after his party's support dropped by more than half compared to the previous election. Lars Klingbeil, leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), described the outcome as a major warning to the federal leadership in Berlin.

Mainstream German parties maintain a policy known as the "Brandmauer" or firewall, refusing to enter formal coalitions with the AfD. However, the BSW party, which crossed the 5% electoral threshold to enter parliament, indicated a willingness to cooperate with the AfD on select issues.

International and Domestic Commentary

The election outcome drew widespread international reaction. Former US President Donald Trump shared a image of the election projection on Truth Social, which was subsequently highlighted by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who characterized the result as a historic victory. In contrast, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sharply criticized anyone celebrating the AfD's performance.

Domestically, the results drew intense concern from advocacy groups and opponents. Holocaust survivor Charlotte Knobloch, head of the Jewish community in Munich and Bavaria, expressed alarm over the results and urged mainstream political parties to prevent further institutional decline.
